Follow the steps below to create your own mask based on a well known character from your culture or background.
1. PICK A CHARACTER / ARCHETYPE
Use the following questions and resources to help you decide on an archetypal character to portray with your mask.
Look online and explore your bookshelf for more inspiration.
- Think of the stories, legends, myths, fairy tales, or fables you have grown up with. Who are the characters you see recur throughout these stories?
- Do you already know of some archetypal masks used in theatre? Are you fascinated or interested in finding out more about one in particular?
- Will your mask be based on a hero? A villain? An animal? A clown/jester?

2. MAKE YOUR MASK
There are many types of masks used in theatre and art. You can choose whatever method you want depending on the resources you have, and the time you want to spend. Some of these tutorials might give you some inspiration.

3. CREATE A STORY FOR YOUR CHARACTER
Use the following questions to help you create a story for your character.
- What is their name? Age? Heritage?
- What stories have already been told about your character?
- What traits make up this characters personality? (Cheeky, wise, evil, heroic, naive, funny, strong, powerful etc)
- What does your character want, seek, or desire, and what must they do to get it?
- What obstacles are in their way? How will they overcome them?
- What other characters will they meet on their journey?
